Located on Edinburgh’s eastern shore, the old port of Leith is only a 15 to 20 minute bus journey from the city centre. In recent years, Leith has become one Edinburgh’s most vibrant areas, but has retained its traditional character as a working port. Like many waterfront developments, Leith has become a desirable place to live, and the influx of young people has created a trendy shopping and nightlife scene. There are dozens of cafes, pubs and restaurants within a few minutes' walk of the apartment, which come in to their own in the summer, when they spill out in to the streets; you can even eat and drink al fresco. Ocean Terminal shopping centre, a 5-minute walk away, is home to many fashionable shops and eating places and has a multiscreen cinema, Vue; moored alongside is the Royal Yacht Britannia. Nearby Bernard Street and The Shore have several useful shops, including a small supermarket, a wholefood shop and gift shops. Leith is renowned for its fish and seafood restaurants and also has a tantalizing choice of Italian, French, Scottish, Indian, Chinese, and Turkish restaurants, as well as Michelin-starred establishments (The Kitchin and Martin Wishart). You can walk to Edinburgh city centre in about 25 minutes or just hop on one of the buses that stop opposite the apartment (buses run 24 hours a day). Leith is ideal for a night out after a busy day sight-seeing in Edinburgh.

Leith is the port of Edinburgh and was once a separate town until in 1920 a hastily organized local referendum (the so-called 'Arranged Marriage', with Leith the reluctant bride) brought Leith under the administrative rule of its neighbourColourful Leith Walk is the long avenue that links Edinburgh and LeithLeith Walk is the umbrella name for a series of differently named streets and terraces. Foodie delicatessens rub shoulders with greasy-spoon cafés, and you can go from Italy to China in the space of a few blocks. On Elm Row at the top of Leith Walk is Valvona & Crolla, one of Britain's top Italian foodshops. The shopfront boasts 'Founded in 1934, Origins in 1860s', and those years of tradition are evident the minute you step inside: hams hang from the ceiling, floor-to-ceiling shelves strain with Mediterranean delicacies and you can often hear Italian being spoken. The shop is still owned and run by descendants of the Crollas and Valvonas who set it up in the 1930s. The shop also has a café, where you can sample the cuisine of Mary Contini, one of Britain's premiere food writers and chefs. The shop plays a role in the Edinburgh Festival each August, when it becomes a venue for Italian music and drama.

The Water of Leith is Edinburgh’s hidden natural asset. Flowing for 24 miles from its source in the Pentland Hills, the river winds its way through the heart of the city to its outflow into the Firth of Forth, meters from the apartment. The river can be explored on foot or bike along the Water of Leith Walkway. On the southern side of Leith is leafy Leith Links, an area of open parkland that is one of the places where golf was first played. Leith Victoria Swim Centre on Great Junction Street has a swimming pool and gym.

Getting there

The apartment is about a 10-minute bus ride from the tram stop "York Place" (which runs directly from/to Edinburgh Airport) and from the main railway station: Edinburgh Waverley Station. Taxis can be hailed throughout the city centre. We will send you detailed directions before your arrival.

For those arriving by car, there is parking available for one car (on request).

Edinburgh has an efficient public transport system run by Transport for Edinburgh. Buses and trams run throughout the city from early morning till midnight, after which there is a reduced night service. Transport for Edinburgh's information office is on Waverley Bridge.

  • “Quiet perfection: Like walking into a show home, this accommodation is functionally perfect and beautifully appointed with quality components. Nadia, the host, was most welcoming and is a good communicator. Everything was provided to facilitate a comfortable stay ... The location is close to many amenities, but also very quiet as it faces the Water of Leith and not the street. I have stayed in many short term rentals in this region of Edinburgh over the years, and this accommodation is as close to perfect as it gets! 10/10 from me.”

  • “An utterly fabulous apartment, in the heart of Leith. Connections to the city centre are great, and the area itself is lovely, worth spending a night or two exploring the pubs and bars if you have the time. Nadia was an excellent host, met us at the apartment and gave us a concise and very useful run down of the area, including suggestions of places to eat and drink, as well as helping us with bus routes. Would recommend to anyone wanting to spend time in Edinburgh and will definitely be back!”

  • “Lovely quiet base for exploring: Had a really nice stay here whilst visiting the tattoo and fringe in Edinburgh. It’s a lovely apartment, really clean, modern and well kept and will happily sleep 4. Can’t fault the stay at all and all 4 of the guests will be looking at stopping here again! Buses are available literally over the road that take you straight in to Princes Street and there are several really good pubs and restaurants within a 5 min walk! Really worth looking at if you are heading to Edinburgh. Thank you!”

Nadia's apartment is like going from home to home, it was well equipped, cosy and extremely clean ... Nadia made it very easy for us when we arrived and gave us not only useful information about the surroundings but also a small backstory of the building and the neighborhood truly interesting. • “It is an amazing cozy apartment tucked in silent area of Leith. However it is just 10-15 mins by bus to the city centre and the bus stop is right outside the house. We were 4 of us and comfortably accommodated in the house. Nadia is a perfect host and she made sure to take care of every little details in the apartment. It is a fully equipped apartment with all your needs. She can definitely be a super host and the place is highly recommended.”

  • “I'm almost afraid to let word out on this gem of a place. Nadia has made The Cooperage a perfect home away from home! Where do I start... (1) It's in beautiful Leith, out of the tourist bustle, along the cobblestone-lined canals just north of downtown Edinburgh (2) The flat is inside the historic Cooperage, an 18th century whiskey warehouse, converted into condos in the mid 20th century, with cobblestones delivering you to its privately secured entrance, (3) It has an anticipating lift to help any visitors ... (4) Because it's an historic building, the windows, doors, and massive wooden beam throughout the house are authentic and charming, yet keep the home properly sealed on rainy days. I mention this because you will want to chill out here! It's remodeled in a clean, unpretentious, quaint and fully functional design.”

  • “The Cooperage is beautiful and historic, which we loved! Not only that, but the host, Nadia, is amazing. She left so many beautiful personal touches about the apartment, it made the place so welcoming. It was a very comfortable place for our family (including an infant) and was quiet in the evenings. It is very easy to get from the apartment to eateries (walking) and to historic sites (a quick bus ride away). The parking is wonderful for travelers with a car. We would highly recommend this apartment to anyone traveling in the area! Cheers!”

Elle est extrement réactive et est au petit soin de ses hôtes. Le logement est fonctionnel, propre, moderne et très bien situé (40 min à pied d'edimbourg). Nous conseillons vivant ce logement pour des séjours cours ou long.”
