The local area
Montgomery Street is in a residential area of Victorian tenements between Easter Road and Leith Walk, both of which have many shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants. There are parks nearby both on Montgomery Street and on London Road. From the apartment there are views to Calton Hill and its monuments: Nelson's Monument (from which a time-ball is lowered every day at 1pm as a time signal to ships out on the Firth of Forth), the Observatory and the National Monument, an unfinished replica of the Parthenon. Initiated by Sir Henry Dundas, 18th century bankroller of Edinburgh's Georgian New Town, to embody the city's reputation as the Athens of the North, the National Monument stands as a reminder of the folly of its patron. Dundas ran out of money and abandoned his ambitious plan; the unfinished building is known irreverently as Edinburgh's Disgrace.
The famous Italian delicatessen Valvona and Crolla is at the end of the street; it has a popular cafe. It's a short walk into town via London Road and Leith Street or via Abbeyhill and Regent Road, and the flat is between two of the city's main bus routes, so if you haven't got time to walk you have a choice of lots of bus services that will take you to the city centre in a few minutes. Montgomery Street Park is the local green space, and nearby London Road Gardens are also good for a walk.
The apartment is about a 5-minute walk from the tram stop "York Place" (which runs directly from/to Edinburgh Airport) and a 20-minute walk from the main railway station (Waverley Station). We will send you detailed directions before your arrival.
For those arriving by car, there is metered parking on Montgomery Street itself, though the maximum parking period is 4 hours. Parking on meters and single-yellow lines is free from 5.30pm to 8.30am; please check on-street signage for exact times of parking restrictions; parking is forbidden at all times on double-yellow lines. Greenside Place Car Park is only a few minutes' walk away on Leith Street.
All tenement apartments in Edinburgh are accessed by shared stairways, which tend to be functional more than luxurious, although the entry-phone system ensures the security of the stairway. Because the building dates from the 19th century, there is no lift and thus no wheelchair access. The apartment is on the second floor.
Edinburgh has an efficient public transport system run by Transport for Edinburgh. Trams and buses run throughout the city from early morning till midnight, after which there is a reduced night service. Lothian Regional Transport's information office is on Waverley Bridge.
