Montgomery Street is in a residential area of Victorian tenements between Easter Road and Leith Walk, both of which have many shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants. The Playhouse Theatre (one of the main venues for the Edinburgh International Festival) and Omni Centre with the multiscreen Vue Omni cinema are only a few minutes away on Leith Walk. Montgomery Street Park is one block away, and nearby London Road Gardens are also good for a walk. A short walk from the apartment is Calton Hill and its monuments: Nelson's Monument (from which a time-ball is lowered every day at 1pm as a time signal to ships out on the Firth of Forth), the Observatory and the National Monument, an unfinished replica of the Parthenon. Initiated by Sir Henry Dundas, 18th century bankroller of Edinburgh's Georgian New Town, to embody the city's reputation as the Athens of the North, the National Monument stands as a reminder of the folly of its patron. Dundas ran out of money and abandoned his ambitious plan; the unfinished building is known irreverently as Edinburgh's Disgrace.

The famous Italian delicatessen Valvona and Crolla with is own cafe is at the end of the street. It's a short walk into town via London Road and Leith Street or Abbeyhill and Regent Road, and the apartment is between two of the city's main bus routes (London Road, and Elm Row on Leith Walk), so if you haven't got time to walk you have a choice of bus services that will take you to the city centre in a few minutes; there are also buses from Easter Road.

Getting there

The apartment is about a 5-minute walk from the tram stop "York Place" (which runs directly from/to Edinburgh Airport) and a 20-minute walk from the main railway station (Waverley Station). We will send you detailed directions before your arrival.

For those arriving by car, there is metered parking on Montgomery Street itself, though the maximum parking period is 4 hours. Parking on meters and single-yellow lines is free from 5.30pm to 8.30am; please check on-street signage for exact times of parking restrictions; parking is forbidden at all times on double-yellow lines. Greenside Place Car Park is only a few minutes' walk away on Leith Street.

All tenement apartments in Edinburgh are accessed by shared stairways, which tend to be functional more than luxurious, although the entry-phone system ensures the security of the stairway. Because the building dates from the 19th century, there is no lift and thus no wheelchair access. The apartment is on the second floor.

Edinburgh has an efficient public transport system run by Transport for Edinburgh. Trams and buses run throughout the city from early morning till midnight, after which there is a reduced night service. Lothian Regional Transport's information office is on Waverley Bridge.

  • “We stayed for a week during the Edinburgh Festival. The flat is well located about 15 minutes walk from Edinburgh Waverley station and plenty of buses pass nearby. Getting in was fine. The flat itself is well furnished and clean with all you need. We tended to eat out and there is a good choice of place within easy walking distance. Overall a very nice flat in a good location.”

  • “Great place, wonderful location, spacious and stylish, comfortable bed: After a week of hotels and B&Bs, the flat was just what we needed. It was spacious and attractive, quiet, and wonderfully located. Our children and grandkids were staying at a hotel on the Royal Mile and we were a 12 minute walk away. The kitchen/eating area was well equipped, though we only used it for breakfast. The living room was light and airy and comfortable. The bed was very comfortable and the bedroom had lots of storage. After a day of sightseeing and dinner at restaurants with family, it was a real pleasure to walk back to our flat and put up our feet and relax. The ability to do a small laundry was a bonus.”

Kitchen is really well kitted out with good quality equipment for self catering. Flat is clean quiet and comfortable so you will have no problem feeling at home. There is one spacious double room with plenty of storage, and a double sofa bed in the lounge which makes up easily into a comfortable bed for two. Highly recommend.”

  • “Peaceful week: Amidst a two month sojourn with friends and family in Scotland, I rented Montgomery Street for a week to enjoy my university city on my terms. It worked. I could walk, explore galleries, sip coffee, cook for a friend or two and shut the door. The apartment was very well equipped: I appreciated the abundance of wooden hangers, good cooking utensils and the kitchen pulley. I will likely return.”

  • “The best apartment I have rented so far in Edinburgh. It was the best apartment of all we have rented so far (my 3rd visit in Edinburgh). We appreciated the cleanliness, very tasteful decor and fantastic location (perfect for those who like to appreciate the city on foot). The apartment and the area were very quiet which was important for us after long days of project preparations and strolling along the beautiful streets of Edi. The apartment had absolutely everything one may need. We loved its spacious and bright kitchen with all kinds of tip top pots, spotless cutlery and plates. Nothing was missing, even herbs and spices were there. The bedroom had a great view of the garden with singing birds and lovely trees. We loved everything about this apartment.”

  • “This flat is just perfect for visiting Edinburgh. The location is great: not far to the centre at all with shops and everything you need close by. The flat itself is perfect for two but four would be fine. Everything was spotless and there was every piece of kitchen ware you could need. The bed was comfortable as was everything else. We would definitely stay again.”
