This apartment is an ideal base from which to explore the city. The Old Town is a few minutes' walk away: a warren of closes and side streets lead from the Grassmarket to the Royal Mile. The Edinburgh College of Art is just along the road from the apartment.

The apartment is situated in Tollcross, an atmospheric area of the city centre, which with its great variety of shops and eating and drinking places is a popular area to live in.

It's a short walk through the Grassmarket or Lauriston Place and Greyfriars to the Royal Mile, the backbone of medieval Edinburgh, which connects Edinburgh Castle at one end with the Palace of Holyroodhouse and the Parliament at the other. (Royal Mile is the combined name for the street formed by Castlehill, Lawnmarket, High Street and Canongate.) Edinburgh's main visitor attractions are on your doorstep and the neighbourhood is full of attractive independent shops and restaurants, bars and cafés to suit all budgets, from cheap and cheerful pizzerias to fine dining establishments. The Hub (the official centre for the Edinburgh International Festival) and the Festival Fringe office are on the Royal Mile, and you can easily walk to many Festival venues; the Usher Hall, Royal Lyceum Theatre, Traverse TheatreFilmhouse and Dance Base are all only a few minutes' walk away. You are also ideally placed to enjoy the Christmas and Hogmanay/New Year festivities. Edinburgh Farmers’ Market takes place every Saturday morning only a short stroll from the apartment.

The apartment is close to the Meadows. The Meadows were originally under water: the Burgh Loch, which was drained in 1740, was one of Edinburgh’s main water supplies. The area is now one of the city’s biggest green spaces, ideal for jogging, walking and other sports. There are public tennis courts, a children’s playpark and Bruntsfield Links Golf Course, one of the oldest courses in the world, where you can have a round of pitch-and-putt.

Getting there

The apartment is about a 25-30-minute walk from the tram stop "Princes Street" (which runs directly from/to Edinburgh Airport) and a 25-minute walk from the main railway station: Edinburgh Waverley Station. We will send you detailed directions before your arrival.

Edinburgh has an efficient public transport system run by Transport for Edinburgh. Trams and buses run throughout the city from early morning till midnight, after which there is a reduced night service. Transport for Edinburgh's information office is on Waverley Bridge.

All tenement apartments in Edinburgh are accessed by shared stairways, which tend to be functional more than luxurious, although the entry-phone system ensures the security of the stairway. There is no lift and thus no wheelchair access. The apartment is on the second floor. The staircase is winding and it is not suitable for anyone with a pushchair as there is nowhere to leave it on the ground floor.
