The Palace of Holyrood House is a couple of minutes' walk away

The Palace of Holyrood House is a couple of minutes' walk away

This apartment is situated on Holyrood Road beside the Royal Mile in the heart of Edinburgh's historic Old Town, and just a few steps away from the Palace of Holyroodhouse and the Parliament. The Royal Mile, the backbone of medieval Edinburgh, connects the Palace of Holyroodhouse at one end with Edinburgh Castle at the top. Edinburgh's main visitor attractions are on your doorstep and the neighbourhood is full of attractive independent shops and restaurants, bars and cafés to suit all budgets, from cheap and cheerful pizzerias to fine dining establishments.

The nearby Canongate area of the Royal Mile was a separate burgh from Edinburgh for over 700 years, taking its name from the canons (priests) of Holyrood Abbey. Because it was near the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the area developed as the court quarter and many fine residences for aristocratic families were built there. One of these, Queensberry House, now forms part of the Scottish Parliament building. Queensberry House was bought in 1686 by the father of the 2nd Duke of Queensberry, whose eldest son, the mad Lord James Douglas, escaped from confinement one night in 1701 and murdered a kitchen-boy – the very night that his father was signing the Act of Union that dissolved the Scots Parliament and put Scotland under English rule. You can find out more about Edinburgh's grisly past on the guided tours that leave from the Royal Mile. See for example Mercat Tours, Witchery Tours and The Real Mary King's Close.

Just across the road is the entrance to the extensive and rugged open space of Holyrood Park. Within Holyrood Park are Salisbury Crags, Arthur's Seat and Whinney Hill: an excellent place for an inner city picnic or ramble. Opposite the building is the popular Our Dynamic Earth visitor centre and the headquarters of The Scotsman newspaper. The Hub (the official centre for the Edinburgh International Festival) and the Festival Fringe office are on the Royal Mile, and you can easily walk to many of the Festival venues. You are also ideally placed to enjoy the Christmas and Hogmanay/New Year festivities.

Getting there

The apartment is approximately 15-20 minutes' walk from both the Airport Express Bus Terminus and the main railway station: Edinburgh Waverley Station. There is also a tram service from Edinburgh Airport to the city centre. Taxis can be hailed throughout the city centre. We will send you detailed directions before your arrival.

For those arriving by car, there is parking available for one car (available on request). Most apartments in this city-centre location have no parking available.

The apartment is on the second floor and there is a lift.

Edinburgh has an efficient public transport system run by Transport for Edinburgh. Trams and buses run throughout the city from early morning till midnight, after which there is a reduced night service. Lothian Regional Transport's information office is on Waverley Bridge.

  • “Clean, comfortable, good location: We liked the convenience of restaurants and a grocery store nearby. Close to the Royal Mile and within walking distance of everything. We have rented from Vacation Rentals before and have been very pleased with their response time, their help and their rentals. Will rent from them again.”

  • “A bright, comfortable, well-located and quiet apartment. This welcoming apartment is located close to Holyrood and the Royal Mile, with a wonderful view of Salisbury Crag. We enjoyed a week of brilliant weather, exploring by train, bus and tour or walking each day and returning to our relaxing apartment each evening. Everything was exactly as shown and stated in the description of the property: All we needed was there. And the lift was a bonus, as indeed was my en suite, as my adult grandchildren commandeered the main bathroom! Very comfortable beds and bedding. The Tesco Local next door was open all hours. Vacation Rentals Scotland provide an excellent booking service and their customer care and follow up processes are second to none - great attention to detail. Thank you, Martin and Ewan, you are an asset to Scotland.”

  • “A very convenient location. Most of the old city attractions are in walking distance. Tesco market for groceries, toiletries, snacks or ice cream is just two doors up the street. There are plenty of restaurants nearby too. There is a lift to the unit that make move in and out with luggage effortless. We are two families with 4 people sharing the unit. The two bathrooms definitely make our lives more efficient. The bedding are very comfortable. What is more important than having a good night sleep after a day of traveling/touring. Edinburgh is a hilly city. Since the unit is at the bottom of an uphill street, it can be a physical challenge to walk up the street. The good news is that taxi is inexpensive around the city. It enjoyed the unit very much as our home away from home for 14 days while we visited Edinburgh.”

  • “Great centrally located flat: This is a great location for anyone wanting to have easy access to the Old Town area including Holyrood Park, Holyrood Castle, The Royal Mile and Edinburgh Castle. It's just a couple of blocks from Parliament. All are in walking distance. My wife and I stayed at this flat for 4 days with our two adult children. The accommodations were just what we needed. It is on the second floor of an apartment building. There is a nice elevator and secure lobby. The apartment is also secure and kept very clean. The kitchen has updated appliances, the two bathrooms are nice and the water pressure is great in the showers. The TV also works great though we were too tired from sight seeing to watch it much. There is a local grocery just half a block from the flat which provided fresh produce, breakfast pastries and water bottles for our excursions. There is an instruction book in the flat which contained all of the information that we needed to know. We would stay here again if we return to Edinburgh.”
